New vision for Creggan gateway

Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership has put on display impressions of a proposed sculpture piece developed by local artist Locky Morris at the Rath Mor shopping Centre and at the Corned Beef Tin on Central Drive.

Sean McMonagle of the Triax Neighbourhood Management Team has described the project as potentially one of the most innovative and striking physical additions to Creggan that has been developed in decades, which will renew and enhance the appearance of the area.

Mr McMonagle said:

“We secured funding for this project from the Arts Council and the Shared Communities Consortium as part of the re-imaging project and commissioned Locky Morris to develop the piece. Locky engaged in consultation with local people, young and old, to generate ideas about what it could look like. At the time the old Viella factory, which was once the site of the BSR factory on Blighs Lane, was being demolished and the history of the BSR greatly influenced the shaping of the project, as did Celtic history, structures and designs. Underpinning these ideas was the sense of community continuity, reinvention and revival.”

CNP now wish to put the proposal to the wider community for consultation and are inviting people to come and view the displays at the different locations.

Mr McMonagle continued:

“It is important that local people have as much input into this project as possible for a sense of ownership and understanding as to its representation. It will be located on the roundabout at the top of the New Road, animating this busy and famous part of Creggan. The location of the art work on this elevated position will be a visually striking feature at the gateway to Creggan.
